  • Tragic accident turns spotlight on St John Ambulance

Media Release - St John Ambulance need to be more accountable for regional services and vehicles.

  •  St John Ambulance should be accountable for the physical condition of the ambulance vehicles that are used by regional volunteer ambulance officers, said Carolyn Smith, assistant secretary of the LHMU.

“An accident at Ellenbrook Speedway where an ambulance lost control and veered into a crowd was caused by a problem with the accelerator, which turns the spotlight right back at St John’s.

“St John Ambulance sell their old vehicles to country volunteer ambulance services.

“What state these vehicles are in when they are handed over is unclear.

“Aside from the issue of making a profit from volunteer services, the condition of ambulance vehicles is of paramount importance.

“This tragic accident raises the question of whether St John’s are selling unroadworthy vehicles and putting lives at risk.

“This accident also emphasises the need for professionally trained paramedics at events such as this, as well as in country towns and regional centres.

A track official was killed and a spectator critically injured when the ambulance vehicle, being driven by volunteers, plowed into the crowd.
