LHMU joins global 350 action

LHMU has joined 30 other Australian unions and environmental organisations to support the international ‘350’ day of action on Saturday, October 24th. The action will take place in over 3,760 locations in 163 countries, including more than 100 local actions across Australia.

“Our response to the climate crisis must be ambitious, effective and equitable,” said Louise Tarrant, LHMU National Secretary. “A fairer society can only be built in a safe climate. This is why we support strong global action aimed at limiting warming to the lowest possible level.”

The 350 action calls for stabilisation of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere at 350 parts per million or lower, as recommended by the world’s leading climate scientists.

The bad news is we’re already past that number—we’re at 387 parts per million, which is why the Arctic is melting, drought is spreading across the planet, and people in pacific island nations are losing their homes.

The good news is that 350 gives us a target to aim for. When the world’s leaders meet in Copenhagen in December to reach an agreement on a new climate treaty, we need them to go further than they’ve planned to go: we need to make sure they’ll pay attention to the latest science and put forward a plan that gets us back to safety.
